  The proposed Maules Creek open cut coal mine is the largest such mine under construction in Australia. The developer is Whitehaven Coal.
  
  The proposal is controversial for numerous reasons.
  
  When running at full capacity, the proposed mine will produce millions of tonnes of coal each year, with something like 30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide released when it is combusted. Over its thirty year projected lifespan, the mine will be responsible for close to a gigatonne of climate-altering emissions.
  
  Development of the site requires the destruction of a large fraction of the Leard State forest, a critically endangered White Box Gum woodland containing around 400 identified species, including 34 threatened species.
  
  The local Gomeroi people claim that the mine development has involved the destruction of sacred sites and the obstruction of access to other sites.
  
  Local farmers are concerned at the water table drawdown associated with the mine.
  
  There have been numerous alleged irregularities in the approval process.
  
  Community opposition to the proposed mine has been strong and well over 200 people arrests have been made in association with non-violent direct action protests running over many months in 2014.
